KYIV, March 2 (Interfax) - Former Georgian president and Ukrainian presidential advisor Mikheil Saakashvili said that the United States' decision to deliver defensive weapons to Ukraine was almost ready.
"America is a democratic country, therefore it was very important that the strident demand for delivering weapons to Ukraine was publicly voiced in Congress and in the Senate, and will be heard next week," Saakashvili, who also heads the Ukrainian International Council for Reforms, said on Channel Five on Sunday evening.
"This demand is being broadcast through all mass media in the United States. When President Poroshenko announced this in his triumphant speech in the U.S. Congress in September 2014, many were surprised and just as many flatly rejected this prospect. Now this decision is practically 99% ready. When this last and most important percent will arrive, I do not know. I hope very soon. Ukraine has very little time at its disposal," Saakashvili said.
The delivery of defensive weapons to Ukraine "will release a powerful signal for saving thousands of lives," he said.
