Poroshenko: Ukrainian army one of five strongest in Europe

KYIV. March 23 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said the Ukrainian Armed Forces and other Ukrainian law enforcement structures have markedly increased their potential over the past year.

"The Ukrainian Armed Forces definitely rank among Europe's top strongest armies," he said at the National Defense Academy on Monday.

Poroshenko also said that the Ukrainian forces were in an appalling condition just a year ago: military formations were understaffed and the logistics services were far from what they should have been, he said.

But even in such condition the Ukrainian forces managed to halt the militia's offensive in Donbas and liberated some cities in eastern Ukraine, including Mariupol, Slovyansk and Kramatorsk, he said.
