Ukrainian officer jailed for divulging state secrets to Russia

ZAPORIZHZHYA. March 24 (Interfax) - A district court in Zaporizhzhya on Monday sentenced a Ukrainian army officer to 2 years in jail on counts of high treason.

The officer had been accused of gathering secret information about Ukrainian forces' positions in the military operation zone in eastern Ukraine and providing it to Russian special services, an Interfax correspondent reported.

The press service of the Ukrainian Security Service's Zaporizhzhya regional department reported that an army aviation senior lieutenant had been "gathering information about data used by crews of Ukrainian fighter jets, and about the system of passwords, call signs, air routes and warplanes' radio frequencies." The data thus gathered would be passed to foreign intelligence services for a reward, the press service said.

The jailed officer was detained in a special operation organized by the Ukrainian Security Service in September 2014 in the guise of disclosing state secrets to customer.
