Presence of U.S. nuclear arms in Europe contradicts NPT - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. March 24 (Interfax) - The deployment of U.S. nuclear weapons in Europe contradicts the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and Washington's arguments refuting this appear to be inappropriate, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich has said.

"We have repeatedly drawn NATO's attention to the fact that such practices directly run counter to the spirit and the letter of NPT," he said. Lukashevich's replies to questions from the media were published on the Foreign Ministry's website on Tuesday.

"In our opinion, to say the least, it is inappropriate for the American side to refer to any 'statute of limitations' and certain 'understandings' that were allegedly achieved during negotiations on the text of NPT," he said.
