MOSCOW. March 24 (Interfax-AVN) - About a thousand troops from engineering units of the Southern Military District (SMD) are holding drills in Russia's Southern, North Caucasus and Crimean Federal Districts, as well as military bases in Armenia and Abkhazia.
"They started executing tasks as part of field drills at nine test and training ranges. Over 250 pieces of engineering equipment are involved," the SMD said in a press release obtained by Interfax-AVN on Tuesday.
"Military engineers are studying new methods of disguising equipment, mining and demining, learning to erect fortified structures for motor rifle, armored and artillery units and learning how to use IMPS-2 pulse induction mine detectors," the spokesperson said.
The equipment includes IMR-2 engineering obstacle-clearing vehicles based on T-72 tanks, BAT-2 armored tracklayers, UMZ and GMZ minelayers, UR-77 demining systems, the spokesperson said.
The field drills will last until mid-April, the spokesperson said.
