Army aviation begins live fire exercise in southern Russia

MOSCOW. March 24 (Interfax-AVN) - Over 20 army helicopters of the Southern Military District (SMD) are taking part in a flying tactical exercise in Krasnodar Territory, an SMD spokesperson said.

"Today, a flying tactical live fire exercise began at an SMD air base in Krasnodar Territory, involving over 20 army helicopters and more than 60 pilots, as well as onboard specialists and ground-control specialists," the SMD said in a press release obtained by Interfax-AVN on Tuesday.

The drill, which will be held on March 24-26, involves crews from Mil Mi-28N "Night Hunter" attack helicopters, Mi-8AAMTSh "Terminator" armored assault helicopters, Mi-24P and Mi-35 "Crocodile" attack helicopters, the spokesperson said.

During maneuvers at a local test and training range crews will execute a number of special tasks, including destruction of tactical airborne troops of a mock enemy, providing fire support for motor rifle divisions and convoys of armored vehicles, the spokesperson said.

In addition, helicopter crews will perform tests in detecting and identifying various objects, mobile and stationary ground targets, armored vehicles, helicopters and low-flying low-speed aircraft of a mock enemy.

"During the drills helicopter crews will perform over 30 training sorties, during which they will fire over 100 unguided rockets and airborne weapons," the spokesperson said.
