DONETSK. April 6 (Interfax) - The process of the voluntary surrender of arms by the population of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) has ended.
"The process of the voluntary surrender of arms in DPR has ended. As of today the compulsory process of the surrender of arms begins that has no time limitations," senior official from the DPR Defense Ministry Eduard Basurin told Interfax on Sunday.
He said a considerable part of armed formations has surrendered their weapons.
Earlier LPR Prime Minister Gennady Tsypkalov told Interfax that a considerable part of armed residents of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) had surrendered weapons by the deadline.
"A big number of people surrendered their arms voluntarily. Even though yesterday was the last day for the surrender of arms, the work continues," he said.
He said that until April 20 the LPR law enforcement bodies will be paying special attention to the way local residents and armed groups will be surrendering weapons.
"We will take a close look at the structure of our armed formations, agencies and law enforcement bodies to see who entered it and who didn't and depending on that apply measures to disarm the remaining groups - those that will be unwilling to do it voluntarily," Tsypkalov said.
