Future Chechen skiing resort one-third demined

MOSCOW. June 2 (Interfax-AVN) - Over 200 hectares of a ski slope in the Chechen village of Veduchi, where an alpine skiing complex is expected to be built, have been demined by members of the Separate Engineering Brigade of the Southern Military District (SMD) since the beginning of April, the SMD headquarters said.

"When demining, SMD bomb disposal experts use modern technical and protective devices, including GLONASS navigators [called] Grot and portable selective induction landmine detectors [UMPS-2] which can detect explosive substances in the ground or snow up to half a meter deep and on the shoreline up to a meter and a half deep," the SMD said in a statement obtained by Interfax-AVN on Monday.

The demining effort involves around 160 personnel, as well as landmine-sniffing dogs. A total of about 700 hectares of the mountain slope is expected to be cleared throughout the year, the SMD spokesperson said.
