Russian student planning to join IS detained in Turkey - Russian Interior Ministry (Part 2)

MOSCOW. June 5 (Interfax) - Moscow State University (MGU) philosophy student Varvara Karaulova, who planned to join the Islamic State (IS) extremist organization, has been detained in Turkey in a joint operation by Interpol and the Turkish authorities, a Russian Interior Ministry spokesman told Interfax.

"Her whereabouts were established as a result of the rapid use of all possibilities available to Interpol and the well-coordinated actions of Turkish and Russian law enforcement agencies," he said.

Karaulova is currently being held at Turkey's National Immigration Agency.

The spokesman also said that the Russian student had been detained in the city of Kilis, south-central Turkey, when trying to cross the Turkish-Syrian border.
