BISHKEK. June 29 (Interfax) - Exchange of fire between border units of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan has occurred at a non-demarcated part of the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border near the Kara-Shoro outpost of the Khaidarkan border unit (Batken region, southern Kyrgyzstan), the Kyrgyz State Border Service press office told Interfax on Monday.
According to preliminary information, the Kyrgyz border unit passed a remark to Uzbek colleagues who were at the border line near the Mashalang border post at the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border, the press office said.
"In response to the demand of Kyrgyz servicemen not to violate the state border and carry out patrol at a certain distance from the border line, the Uzbek border unit opened fire on Kyrgyz servicemen, the exchange of fire between the two countries' border units occurred at the non-demarcated border section," the press office said.
According to information from the press office, Kyrgyz border guards have not been injured.
An investigation has been launched over the fire exchange and a meeting is currently being held between Kyrgyz and Uzbek border representatives in order to determine reasons behind and circumstances of the incident.
