Uzbek border guards had to open fire against border violators from Tajikistan, injuring one of them

TASHKENT. June 30 (Interfax) - An Uzbek border guard squad in Besharyk District in the Fergana Valley has arrested two men who illegally crossed into the country from the neighboring Tajikistan, said a spokesperson for the National Border Committee of the Uzbekistan National Security Service.

"During the effort to arrest them, the violators tried to resist the border guards prompting them to use a firearm," the spokesperson said.

As a result, a man, born 1985, from Sughd Region, Tajikistan, sustained a gunshot wound. "After receiving first aid he was taken to a local hospital. His condition is thought to be moderately critical. The second man too was a resident of Sughd Region," the spokesperson said.

Uzbek law enforcement authorities have launched a criminal inquiry.
