ASTANA. Aug 28 (Interfax) - Kazatomprom, the Kazakh national nuclear holding company, has adopted its development strategy for the period of 2015-2025, the company's press service said on Friday.
"Realization of the strategy will allow Kazatomprom and Kazakhstan to keep the achieved leading positions in the world production of natural uranium. For this purpose the company plans to modernize existing mines and construct new ones, and introduce advanced technologies designed to improve efficiency and cut the costs of uranium production," the company's press release said.
One of the strategic directions for Kazatomprom has been the diversification of business into all upstream levels of the pre-reactor nuclear fuel cycle. The company plans to gain access to the market of conversion, enrichment and fabrication of nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, it said.
Under the development strategy, the company is also to improve the corporate management system, pursue the optimization of business processes and dispose of its non-core assets.
In 2014, Kazakhstan produced 22,829 tonnes of uranium, which is 1.5% more than in 2013.
Kazatomprom is Kazakhstan's national operator in the exportation of uranium and its compounds, rare metals, nuclear fuel for NPPs, special equipment, technologies and dual-purpose materials.
