Lavrov, Kerry discuss situation in Syria, fight against ISIS

MOSCOW. Sept 7 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry discussed the situation in Syria and issues relating to the fight against terrorism in a phone conversation on Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry has reported.

"The meeting addressed various aspects of the situation in Syria and around it, issues relating to the fight against ISIS and other terrorist groups, and also issues relating to interaction in support of the efforts of the UN to establish political process in Syria in accordance with the provisions of the Geneva communique of June 30, 2012," a report posted on the Russian Foreign Ministry website says.

"Sergei Lavrov and John Kerry reached an agreement to continue close contacts on Syrian settlement issues," the report says.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said the conversation was on the U.S. initiative.
