Suspected terrorist held in Bishkek planned series of bomb attacks - Kyrgyz National Security Service

BISHKEK. Oct 2 (Interfax) - A man suspected of belonging to an international terrorist organization detained in Bishkek on Friday morning planned to commit a series of bomb attacks in Kyrgyzstan, a Kyrgyz National Security Committee spokesperson told Interfax.

"It has been determined that the detainee is a member of an international terrorist group. He planned to organize a number of terrorist attacks using improvised explosive devices in Kyrgyzstan's territory," he said.

Security officers who detained the man born in 1972 seized from him an improvised pistol, ammunition, an RGD-5 grenade, components for an improvised explosive device, knives, brass knuckles, literature and electronic storage devices containing extremist materials, he said.

"During preliminary investigative procedures, the detainee confessed to his affiliation with the terrorist underground and said about plans to commit terrorist attacks," he said.

The man has been taken into custody due to a criminal case opened against him.

The National Security Committee is continuing counter-terrorist procedures to identify the whereabouts of other members of the terrorist underground and prevent their criminal activities, the spokesperson said.

It was reported earlier that a man suspected of plotting a terrorist attack had been detained in a special operation on Friday morning. The National Security Committee refrained from giving details of the operation to protect the investigation's secrecy.
