Russian diplomat reiterates that Russia bombing only IS in Syria, not opposition

MOSCOW. Oct 13 (Interfax) - Russia is not bombing moderate Syrian opposition units but is targeting exclusively Islamic State forces in Syria, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Meshkov said.

"It has long been perfectly clear to everyone that Russia is bombing ISIL and other terrorist organizations rather than the opposition," Meshkov said in commenting on an earlier statement by the EU foreign ministers urging Russia to stop delivering airstrikes upon moderate Syrian opposition positions in this country.

The EU foreign policy chiefs said in a statement earlier on Monday: "The recent Russian military attacks that go beyond Dae'sh [the Islamic State] and other UN-designated terrorist groups, as well as on the moderate opposition, are of deep concern, and must cease immediately."

"So too must the Russian violations of the sovereign airspace of neighboring countries," the statement says.
