Russian Defense Ministry: Russian, U.S. experts recognize rapprochement of positions on key provisions of future document

MOSCOW. Oct 15 (Interfax) - Russian and U.S. military experts have held the third videoconference to coordinate the text of a possible understanding on the safety of flights over Syria of Russian aviation and aerial vehicles of the U.S.-led coalition, the Defense Ministry reports.

"The rapprochement of positions on key provisions of the future document was recognized. The succession of further moves of the sides was agreed upon. The discussion like the previous ones was professional and took place in a constructive atmosphere," a report received by Interfax says.

On Tuesday Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said Russia and the United States were expected to hold the third videoconference on problems of Syria on October 14 to discuss an interagency document proposed by the Russian Defense Ministry on actions in airspace over Syria.

Russia has signaled its willingness "to bring the matter to a conclusion," he said.

"We hope that Washington will consider our ideas promptly and that the third teleconference on the possibility of interaction between our countries in Syrian skies will take place already tomorrow," he said.

The Defense Ministry reported on Tuesday evening that in compliance with agreements reached during an October 10, 2015 video conference, the Russian Defense Ministry prepared proposals on the text of a possible Russian-U.S. agreement on ensuring flight safety in the course of military operations in Syria's airspace.

"Russian experts have approached U.S. ideas as constructively as possible. The goal is to finish work on the document within the next few days. A draft document was passed to the U.S. along military-diplomatic channels on October 13, 2015," it said.

On Tuesday U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said at a press conference in Boston that the United States planned to hold a new round of talks with Russia on the prevention of conflicts in the skies above Syria on Wednesday.

He stressed that talks on the issue were progressing but that no final decisions had been made.
