MOSCOW. Oct 28 (Interfax) - Investigators have detained suspected recruiters of Moscow State University student Varvara Karaulova into the Islamic State ranks, lawyer Alexander Karabanov, who represents the interests of the young woman's family, said.
"According to information available to me, the recruiters were detained and arrested in the Chechen Republic," Karabanov told Interfax on Tuesday.
He said he did not have any additional information.
Karabanov said earlier that Karaulova was summoned as a witness in the militant recruitment case to the Investigative Committee.
"She was invited for giving testimony as a witness in the Investigative Committee in the criminal case, which was opened against the recruiters and, according to the information available to me, is being investigated in Chechnya," he told Interfax on Tuesday.
Karaulova's mother said that officers of the law enforcement agencies came at Karaulova's residence place on Tuesday and invited her to give testimony, the lawyer said.
He said he was completely unaware of any urgent search actions which could have been conducted at Karaulova's residence place.
The young woman disappeared on May 27 after going to class but failing to show up. According to the lawyer for the Karaulov family, she had been fascinated by the ideas of radical Islam.
In early June, it was reported that 13 Russian citizens and Moscow State University student Karaulova, who were presumably planning to join the Islamic State terrorist organization, were detained on the Turkish-Syrian border. Karaulova returned to Moscow on June 11.
The investigative bodies of the Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee for Moscow are probing the information about the attempt at recruiting the woman student. Upon the results of the investigation the Russian Investigative Committee should decide whether to open a criminal case or deny opening it.
