Medvedev: there is a need to put in safe condition and then eliminate some nuclear facilities (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Nov 16 (Interfax) - Russia will have to put in safe condition a number of nuclear facilities and improve the spent nuclear fuel storage infrastructure in the next 15 years, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev told a government meeting on Monday.

"In the next 15 days, we need to put in safe condition and then eliminate a whole number of facilities. The territories where they are located should be brought in order using rehabilitation measures," Medvedev said.

Medvedev also said Russia will develop infrastructure to store spent nuclear fuel from nuclear power plants and "process and finally isolate radioactive waste."

"Additionally, we should improve the control and nuclear and radiation safety system. The main emphasis here is, of course, on the health of workers of the nuclear industry. Eventually our duty is to rule out the influence of radiation factors on people and the environment," Medvedev said.

The Monday meeting of the Russian government addresses the federal nuclear and radiation security program for the period until 2020 and the period until 2030.
