Anti-terrorist laws in Russia prove effective, intl cooperation should develop - Kosachyov

MOSCOW. Nov 16 (Interfax) - Russia's legislative support for counterterrorism and law enforcement practice in this area are sufficient and effective and there is a need to ensure broad international cooperation in this sphere, Konstantin Kosachyov, head of the Federation Council committee on international affairs, said.

"I can draw the conclusion that legislative support of this work and law enforcement practice in Russia are sufficient and effective and they do not require any extra operative reaction from the Federal Assembly," Kosachyov told reporters on Monday.

Kosachyov said he has drawn this conclusion from the meeting of the committee devoted to counterterrorism.

The senator believes decisions that have been made in this sphere have proved effective and should be consistently implemented.

"As regards interaction with other countries in this work, there are more than enough reserves. And the main problem is that some countries are artificially politicizing this issue, extra far-fetched obstacles associated with some political differences and obstacles that considerably reduce the effectiveness of this work appear in it, and they create extra conditions for further development of terrorist programs and organizations," Kosachyov said.

For this reason, the emphasis in further counterterrorism work should be on ensuring broader and deeper international cooperation in this sphere.

"We believe that the national parliaments can and should play a role here, both in terms of improving their own national legislations and in terms of exerting pressure on the executive administrations of their countries to cause them to overcome foreign policy differences and begin full-scale cooperation on countering the terrorist threat, which is not limited by any preconditions," he said.
