Georgian, Russian reps discuss trade, humanitarian issues in Prague

TBILISI. Nov 20 (Interfax) - Special Envoy of the Georgian Prime Minister for Relations with Russia Zurab Abashidze and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin discussed a number of trade, economic, and humanitarian problems in the bilateral relations during their meeting in Prague on Thursday.

"In the course of the dialogue, several questions remained open with regard to an easing of visa rules for certain categories of Georgian nationals by the Russian side, as well as the question of resumption of the railway traffic across Abkhazia," Abashidze told reporters in Prague following the three-hour meeting.

The dialogue on the resumption of the railway communications came to a stalemate, as "the formula earlier presented by the Russian side, according to which Georgia has to start talks with Abkhazia, is absolutely unacceptable" for Tbilisi, he said.

"We also discussed the release of several Georgian citizens convicted back in 2008 on espionage charges from prisons in Russia and there is a hope that a positive decision will be made," Abashidze said.

The next meeting between high representatives of Georgia and Russia, Abashidze and Karasin, will be held in Prague in February 2016.
