Russia to support Afghanistan's fight against terrorism - Medvedev

ZHENGZHOU. Dec 15 (Interfax) - Russia supports the efforts of the Afghan government in the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has said at a meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of Government.

"Russia supports efforts of the government and the people of Afghanistan in the provision of peace and the revival of a stable, neutral and economically sustainable country that would be free from extremism, drug crime and other problems," Medvedev said.

"The terrorist aggression feeds on the chaos and anarchy spreading in countries of the Middle East and North Africa," he said.

"It is possible to deter these challenges only by forming a united anti-terrorist front, leaving behind ideological disagreements. The Shanghai [Cooperation] Organization stands for bolstering the joint fight of the international community against terrorist groups. In line with resolutions of the Security Council, our countries are taking comprehensive measures envisaged by the program of cooperation between member states in the fight against terrorism, separatism and extremism in the period from 2016 till 2018," Medvedev said.

"An improvement of the activity of the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure will help resolve the problem of financing the development of a secure telecommunication system between bodies of the Shanghai Organization," he said.

Medvedev also said that security was indivisible and it was impossible to provide one's own security not caring about the wellbeing of the others.

"It is absolutely impossible to be detached, I am confident that the indivisibility criterion is equally applicable to the socioeconomic development," he said.
