MOSCOW. Dec 17 (Interfax) - With the terror threat still present, one of the biggest challenges facing the Strategic Missile Forces (RVSN) is to prevent attempts at nuclear terrorism, RVSN Commander Col. Gen. Sergei Karakayev told reporters.
"In this respect, one of the RVSN's main activities in the past few years has been to optimize security and defense at our bases and to increase their anti-terror protection," Karakayev said.
The bulk of efforts in 2015 focused on continuing to modernize and keep ready the operating automatic security systems at RVSN bases, equipping them with new types of security systems and developing prospective ones, he said.
"Recent years saw an increased dynamic of re-equipping RVSN bases with new automated (technical) security systems. In 2013-2015, five RVSN bases - in Teikovo, Nizhny Tagil, Kozelsk and Novosibirsk - were equipped with modern systems that meet the requirements of guidelines documentation. Only two high-risk nuclear sites were equipped over a similar period from 2010 to 2013," Karakayev said.
Subsequent plans include continuing the timely, gradual replacement of out-of-date security systems with their modern counterparts, he said. "In 2016, for instance, three bases are to be re-equipped with new modern security systems - in Nizhny Tagil, Kozelsk and Novosibirsk," Karakayev said.
