Task force determining Syria zones under truce - U.S. Department of State

WASHINGTON. March 2 (Interfax) - The task force for the cessation of hostilities co-chaired by Russia and the United States has been determining Syria areas under truce, an official from the U.S. Department of State told Interfax.

He warned that maps available on the Internet were not reliable.

Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said earlier that the United Nations had been using Syria operative maps available to the general public online. He said he was hoping that Russia and the United States would coordinate their efforts and draw up a single map of the military situation in Syria.

"The ISSG Ceasefire Task Force continues to work on the delineation of areas that are subject to the cessation of hostilities and those that are not, in accordance with the decision agreed by all ISSG members February 11," the department official said.

"We understand the urgent need for clarity on these areas, which is necessary for Syrians to understand what constitutes a violation," he noted.

"However, the various maps in circulation on the internet are inaccurate and do not reflect our understanding of the areas covered in the cessation of hostilities," he told Interfax.

The ISSG engages 17 countries, among them Russia and the United States, and a number of organizations assisting in the political settlement process in Syria. The ceasefire task force operates under the UN aegis and is co-chaired by Russia and the United States.
