KYIV/LUHANSK/DONETSK. March 2 (Interfax) - The militia from the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics (DPR and LPR) shelled Ukrainian government forces' positions 47 times between 6:00 a.m. Tuesday and 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, the press center of the military operation in southeastern Ukraine reports.
"Forty-seven attacks have been recorded over the past 24 hours, including 29 in the Donetsk sector, 15 in the Mariupol sector, and 3 in the Luhansk sector," the press center reported on Facebook on Wednesday.
In particular, the militias fired 82mm mortars upon Ukrainian government forces' strongholds in Mayorsk and grenade launchers and large-caliber machineguns upon those in Zaitseve and Novhorodske.
Ukrainian government positions in Opytne, Pisky, and Avdiyivka were shelled with "various types of weapons," it said.
The press center of the Ukrainian government forces also said the situation in the area of Maryinka and Krasnohorivka was unstable. Mortar fire was also opened upon Ukrainian government positions in Talakivka, Chermalyk, Hnutove, Krasnohorivka, and Nevelske.
The militias reduced their activity at about midnight, the press center reported.
The Luhansk news center, on the contrary, reported that several districts in the region had been shelled by Ukrainian government forces.
In particular, the self-proclaimed Luhansk people's republic (LPR) police said the villages of Lyman, Zhovte, Kalynivka, and Lohvynove came under fire. The militia insisted that Ukrainian government forces fired 82mm mortars, small arms, and guns installed on armored fighting vehicles.
"There are no casualties," the LPR police said.
The Donetsk news agency quoted Maxym Zhukovsky, the head of the Petrovsky district administration in Donetsk, as saying that four transformer substations were de-energized because of attacks by Ukrainian government forces in the Petrovsky district and one in Oleksandrivka.
Five homes and two agricultural installations were damaged by gunfire in Staromykhailivka. No reports were immediately available on possible casualties. It had been reported earlier that Staromykhailivka had been shelled on Tuesday evening.
