YEREVAN. April 6 (Interfax) - The breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) is a party to the agreement over ceasefire in the Karabakh conflict zone, said David Babayan, press secretary for the NKR president.
"Although from the legal point of view, the agreement was reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan, it is clear that the NKR is a party to the agreement," Babayan told a press conference in Stepanakert.
Earlier, Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan said that a Karabakh ceasefire agreement had been reached at a meeting of the Armenian and Azeri chiefs of the general staff in Moscow. The Azerbaijan Defense Minsitry confirmed this information.
The situation in the Karabakh conflict zone sharply escalated early on April 2. The hostilities began with the use of aircraft and artillery. The conflicting parties accused each other of violating the truce on the contact line, with each reporting limited losses, while claiming significant ones on the enemy side.
On April 5, Baku and Stepanakert, the NKR capital, announced having reached a ceasefire agreement effective as of noon local time (11 a.m. Moscow time).
