MOSCOW. May 11 (Interfax) - Moscow has condemned a terrorist attack committed in Sadr City, a suburb of Baghdad.
On Wednesday, a car bomb exploded in a local market area of the Iraqi capital's suburb, with a predominantly Shia population. The attack killed over 60 people, and left more than 90 injured, including many women and children. The terrorist group ISIL has claimed responsibility for the attack, according to reports.
"We strongly condemn this barbaric criminal attack aimed at provoking further destabilization in Iraq, exacerbating sectarian hatred in this friendly country. We declare our solidarity with the Iraqi leadership and people in the uncompromising fight against terrorism," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
"What happened in the suburb of Baghdad became, yet another, illustrative demonstration of the barbaric essence of warring radicals who have, for years, been sowing hatred and animosity on Iraqi land, under the guise of pseudo-religious slogans. This, once again, confirms the need for countries in the region, and the entire international community, to join efforts in the fight against extremists wherever they are," the ministry said.
