Baku wants Armenian military to face tribunal

BAKU. May 13 (Interfax) - Azerbaijan has called for an international trial of the Armenian military, Safar Akhmedov, senior aide to Azerbaijan's military prosecutor, said.

"As a result of a provocation carried out by the Armenian side in early April in the Karabakh conflict zone, criminal cases have been opened in connection with the damage done to the Azeri side, which will be sent to the relevant judicial bodies of the republic for investigation. The Armenian war criminals have to face an international trial," Akhmedov said during a hearing in the Azeri parliament.

"At the same time, facts of inhumane treatment of the bodies of the Azeri military killed in clashes have been registered. An examination of the bodies of the Azeri troops returned by the Armenian side showed facts of vandalism, when Armenians pierced dead Azeri troops' eyes and cut off their ears," Akhmedov said.

Stepanakert and Yerevan earlier accused the Azeri troops of the same crimes.

The bodies of 18 servicemen killed on April 2-5 were handed over to the Armenians on April 10 with the mediation of the Red Cross and the office of the personal representative of the OSCE chairperson-in-office, the press service for the Armenian Investigative Committee has reported.

The press service for the Armenian Defense Ministry reported on April 14 that 92 people, including civilians, had been killed in the conflict with Azerbaijan on April 2-5. Azerbaijan confirms the death of 31 troops.
