Lavrov expects U.S. to ensure "normal" Syrian opposition's separation from extremists

VIENNA. May 18 (Interfax) - Russia expects the United States to fulfill its obligation on separating the moderate opposition and Jabhat al-Nusra [banned in Russia] in Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"We expect that the United States and other countries that have taken on the obligation to make sure that the normal and non-extremist opposition dissociate itself from Jabhat al-Nusra, including geographically, will fulfill it," Lavrov said following an International Syria Support Group meeting in Vienna on Tuesday.

Moscow expects that "those foreign countries that are continuing to patronize Jabhat al-Nusra on the quiet will not have the pretext to demand ending the bombing of its positions," he said.

Jabhat al-Nusra has joined "situational alliances with various groups that have seemingly signed up for the cessation of hostilities, then withdrawn from these agreements when it's convenient to them, and then joined them again," Lavrov said.
