SOFIA. June 30 (Interfax) - Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has pointed to the existence of a number of frozen conflicts and pockets of instability in the Black Sea region and said that Sofia is awaiting a collective resolution by NATO countries regarding security assurances.
"What we see in the Black Sea region are the so-called triumphal arch of instability and frozen conflicts," Plevneliev told a press conference held jointly with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Sofia on Thursday.
The current situation prompted regional leaders to look for security assurances, he said. Bulgaria is looking for such assurances from NATO and is expecting a NATO decision on this issue, Plevneliev said.
"We have got to realize the extreme danger that exists in this region, we have got to be ready to make very responsible political decisions to assure security," the Bulgarian leader said, adding that the balance of forces in the Black Sea region is completely broken and currently non-existent.
"All of us will have to look for safety assurances in the absence of the balance and in the face of the rising threat, frozen conflicts," Plevneliev said.
He said countries should look for a collective decision. "No one country can manage on its own. Bulgaria is a worthy member of the EU and NATO and we are looking to protect our security in these two formats of democratic states," Plevneliev said.
Sofia is expecting important decisions to be made at the forthcoming NATO summit in Warsaw that would give extra assurances to NATO members on the Eastern and Southern flanks, the Bulgarian president said.
