Russian military destroy some 2,400 deer killed by anthrax in Yamal

SALEKHARD. Aug 15 (Interfax) - The Russian military have destroyed the bodies of some 2,400 deer in the anthrax-contaminated area of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District.

There are no new deaths of deer on the territory, the press service for the governor of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District said on Monday. The total number of vaccinated deer in Yamal exceeds 115,000.

"From 2017, the vaccination of nomads and people from risk groups, and also all 700,000 deer in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, will become annual and compulsory along with traditional vaccination," the report said.

Of the indigenous peoples and specialists from the risk group, including those involved in the rehabilitation measures in the quarantined area, over 4,000 people have been vaccinated, the report said.

According to earlier reports, quarantine was put in place in the Yamal region of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District over the death of deer from anthrax on July 15. The infection is dangerous to people: an anthrax agent was found in 23 people; a 12-year-old boy died.
