Kazan nuclear-powered sub to be delivered to Navy in H2 2018

ST. PETERSBURG. Sept 5 (Interfax) - A second multirole nuclear-powered submarine of the Yasen family, the Kazan, is due to be delivered to the Russian Navy in the second half of 2018, a source from the defense sector told reporters on Monday.

The submarine will be commissioned upon the end of successful trials, he said.

In all, seven subs of the Yasen project are expected to be built for the Navy before 2020, including six under modernized project 885M, which began with the Kazan project in June 2009. The lead sub of the Yasen project, the Severodvinsk, was built by Sevmash and delivered to the Navy on June 17, 2014. It was on a trial run until recently.

The Kazan, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk and Arkhangelsk multirole nuclear-powered subs are under construction as part of the modernized project Yasen-M.

The St. Petersburg Malakhit Special Marine Engineering Design Bureau designed subs of Project Yasen in accordance with the Navy command's needs. The project employs numerous engineering solutions which have not been used by domestic submarine builders before. All parts of electronic warfare systems, modernized equipment and crucial systems are made in Russia.

According to open sources, subs of this series are armed with Kalibr and/or Onix missile systems.
