Moscow calls on Kyiv's curators, rights activists to give assessment to actions of extremists in Ukraine - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. Sept 5 (Interfax) - Moscow has expressed outrage and alarm about the setting on fire of the building of the Ukrainian television channel Inter.

"It was with outrage and deep alarm that we took the news about the next major violation of the principle of freedom of expression and safety of the mass media and journalists in Ukraine, the arson in the building of the television channel Inter in Kyiv and the actions taking place around it, in which, unfortunately, people have been hurt," the Russian Foreign Ministry's information and press department said in its commentary.

"We are again calling on the political 'curators' of Kyiv and the relevant international institutions and media rights organizations to give a legal and moral assessment to the actions of the extremists and demand an end to the deliberate policies to suppress freedom of speech in the country," the document said.

"The situation in this sphere is also exacerbated by the fact that the authorities are not just conniving with local nationalist and extremist organizations. Some high-ranking people by their statements openly entice the latter to take illegal actions," the commentary said.
