Putin comes to Uzbekistan for private visit

MOSCOW. Sept 6 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Samarkand to pay tribute to the memory of late Uzbek President Islam Karimov.

It was announced in Uzbekistan on September 2 that Karimov, 78, died after suffering a stroke.

The first Uzbek president was buried in accordance with Muslim tradition on September 3 in his home city of Samarkand, near the Shah-i-Zinda memorial, at a cemetery where his parents had been buried.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev headed the official Russian delegation to the funeral on the order from the Russian president who was visiting Vladivostok on those days.

Putin said on Monday in China, where he was attending a G20 summit, that he intended to pay tribute to the memory of Karimov in Uzbekistan.
