SAMARKAND. Sept 6 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has laid flowers on the grave of first Uzbek President Islam Karimov in Samarkand.
As soon as he arrived in Samarkand, Putin went to the cemetery where Karimov was buried on September 3. The cemetery in Samarkand, the home city of Karimov, is situated near the Shah-i-Zinda memorial. The late president's parents were also buried there.
The Russian president paid tribute to the memory of the first Uzbek president together with Uzbek Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Putin bent his knee at the Karimov grave and laid a bouquet of red roses.
It was announced in Uzbekistan on September 2 that Karimov, 78, died after suffering a stroke.
The first Uzbek president was buried on September 3.
