MOSCOW. Sept 13 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russia-U.S. agreement to set up a joint entity for coordinating anti-terrorism strikes in Syria is a major step forward, State Duma Defense Committee Chairman, former Russian Black Sea Fleet Commander Adm. Vladimir Komoyedov told Interfax on Monday.
"This is a real breakthrough made at the operative level," he said.
"Whenever a work is done according to a joint intention and plan, it is highly efficient and the goal is rapidly achieved," Komoyedov said.
The location of a Russian-U.S. center is not important, given the available communication and intelligence systems, he said. "Most importantly, we have agreed on a joint intention, interaction and coordination," the admiral said.
"Now that two super-powers have come to terms, the terrorists will bust a gut if they try to impede implementation of those agreements," Komoyedov said, answering a question whether the risk of Syria truce disruption by fighters from ISIL and Jabhat al-Nusra (banned in Russia) was high.
Head of the Russian Armed Forces' General Staff Main Operative Department Lt. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi said on Monday that the Russian Aerospace Forces would continue strikes on terrorist targets in Syria.
"A joint executive center is being created by Russia and the United States for the purposes of target identification, which will help coordinate strikes delivered by the Russian Aerospace Forces and aircraft from the U.S.-led coalition," Rudskoi said.
The cessation of hostilities regime took effect across Syria at 7 p.m. Moscow time on Monday.
