Vladimir Monomakh nuclear-powered missile sub completes inter-fleet travel, arrives in Kamchatka

MOSCOW. Sept 26 (Interfax-AVN) - The Vladimir Monomakh strategic nuclear-powered missile submarine of Project 955 'Borei' has successfully travelled from the Northern Fleet to the Pacific Fleet, the Russian Defense Ministry's information and mass communications department told Interfax-AVN on Monday.

"The submarine has been moored near the modern infrastructure built in Kamchatka for basing next-generation nuclear-powered submarines. Pacific Fleet Chief of Staff RAdm. Igor Osipov welcomed the Vladimir Monomakh on the Vilyuchinsk pier and congratulated the submariners on their arrival at their new base having successfully traveled through northern latitudes," the report said.

The Vladimir Monomakh began its inter-fleet voyage on August 15.

The first serial sub of Project 955, the Alexander Nevsky, performed its inter-fleet voyage within approximately the same period in 2015.

Both the Alexander Nevsky and the Vladimir Monomakh have joined the 25th submarine division of the Pacific Fleet. Submarines of the kind are armed with Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles. The 25th division also includes three strategic missile submarines of Project 667BDR.

The keel of the Vladimir Monomakh was laid at the Sevmash plant of United Shipbuilding Corporation in March 2006; the submarine was launched in December 2012 and commissioned by the fleet in December 2014.

The Vladimir Monomakh test-fired two Bulava missiles from the White Sea on November 14, 2015.

The lead submarine of the Borei project, the Yury Dolgoruky, joined the Northern Fleet. In all, the Russian Navy will be supplied with eight strategic missile submarines of Projects 955 and 955A before 2020.
