Student from Togliatti recruited into ISIL, heading for Syria detained - source

SAMARA. Oct 25 (Interfax) - The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) branch for the Samara region has prevented a foreign student of Togliatti State University from entering Syria as the latter was going to fight on the side of Islamic terrorists, a source with the regional law enforcement agencies told Interfax.

The student, who was born in 1998, was detained by FSB operatives on October 18 and confessed during interrogation.

The detainee is a citizen of a Central Asian republic, the interlocutor of the news agency said.

"Approximately in early October 2016, the student was recruited over the Internet by Islamic State recruiters [a terrorist organization outlawed in Russia] to undergo training at a special camp and get involved in the hostilities in Syria on the side of terrorists. The recruiter instructed him on how to travel from Russia to Syria by transit through Turkey, and as the student did not have money, bought him the tickets on the Samara-Moscow and Moscow-Istanbul flights," he said.

A criminal inquiry has been launched on the charge of "preparation for participation in the activity of a terrorist organization."

The detained student has been put into custody; operative search actions are underway to ascertain all the circumstances of the crime.
