Russia interested in finding out reasons why UN officials did not accompany humanitarian convoy that came under fire in Syria on Sept 19

MOSCOW. Oct 28 (Interfax) - Moscow is hoping that the investigation into the incident involving a humanitarian convoy that occurred in Syria on September 19 will take into account the fact that UN officials did not accompany it, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"We have a question: was it an accident? The UN people said they could not accompany that convoy purely due to some bureaucratic problems, but there is no doubt that this fact should be taken into account when an investigation into what really happened to the convoy on September 19 is conducted," Lavrov told a press conference following negotiations with the foreign ministers of Iran and Syria.

"When this convoy was being prepared, and it was prepared very thoroughly, at the moment when it had already started rolling, it suddenly turned out that UN officials were not accompanying it, although in all previous situations when humanitarian convoys were sent they were accompanied by officials from UN humanitarian establishments," the minister said.
