Energia Corp to partake in space robot development

MOSCOW. Nov 15 (Interfax-AVN) - Energia Corporation specialists will participate in the development of a robot to go on a space mission onboard the next-generation Federation spaceship, the corporation said.

"The device will derive from the FEDOR (Final Experimental Demonstration Object Research) project of NPO Android Technics and the Future Research Fund," a report seen by Interfax-AVN on Monday said.

The space robot project was highlighted at a recent meeting of the corporation chaired by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin.

Energia Corporation General Director Vladimir Solntsev decided to set up a project team at a research center of the corporation which is tasked with determining areas for using the prospective robot and with accomplishing other tasks, the corporation said, adding that Energia Corporation General Designer Yevgeny Markin would supervise the work.

"Our involvement in the FEDOR-based space robot project will bring us to the next level in the development of robotic technologies," the corporation quoted Solntsev as saying.

The project will be joined by the Committee of Youth Innovative Projects currently implementing six projects, some of which have won the attention of the Skolkovo Foundation and the Agency for Strategic Initiatives.

"Energia Corporation has developed space robots before. The creation of an adaptive programmable anthropomorphically functional robot has been ongoing since 2009 with the participation of the Russian State Scientific Center for Robotics and Technical Cybernetics (RTC)," the corporation said.

"In 2016, the corporation, RTC and NPO Android Technics won a tender for research and development of a robot for prospective space facilities. The robot will begin its trial run in 2020-2024 on board Russia's research-and-power module of the International Space Station (ISS)," it said.

The complex will consist of a mobile robot, remote controls, integration means and a ground segment, the corporation said.
