Lavrov warns against too high expectations of progress in peace treaty conclusion with Japan

MOSCOW. Dec 5 (Interfax) - While Moscow and Tokyo share some common ground in their positions regarding the conclusion of a peace treaty, there shouldn't be excessively high expectations in this issue, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said following negotiations with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida on Saturday.

"The main coincidence is the clearly articulated wish of our leaders to find a mutually acceptable solution that would serve both Russia's and Japan's interests and would be accepted by the public in both countries," he said.

This requires "boring, painstaking and steady work," Lavrov said. "The emotional media hype about this issue and its treatment either in a confrontational tone or in a manner of excessively high expectations of immediate progress are not conducive to this," Lavrov said.
