MOSCOW. Jan 10 (Interfax-AVN) - An air defense formation of the Northern Fleet's Air Force and Air Defense Army armed with S-400 Triumf air defense systems will be put on combat duty in 2017 to protect the Arctic sector of Russian airspace, the Northern Fleet said in a report on Tuesday.
"In the end of 2016, crews of anti-aircraft missile units of the division were trained to operate the new systems at the Kapustin Yar range (in the Astrakhan region) in the course of initial fire drills," the report posted on the Russian Defense Ministry's website said.
While at the range, the crews practiced an air defense engagement by use of missile targets imitating modern means of air attack by a simulated enemy, it said.
The S-400 Triumf is built for highly efficient defense from every type of air attack means. It can destroy all types of planes, tactical and theater ballistic missiles, intermediate-range ballistic missiles, hypersonic targets, and other current and prospective air attack means.
