DPR reports nearly 5,000 attacks on its positions in past week

DONETSK/KYIV. Jan 13 (Interfax) - The self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) came under 4,988 attacks over the past week, Eduard Basurin of the DPR Defense Ministry said.

"There have been 1,500 shelling instances involving artillery, tanks and mortars, and 23 populated localities have been attacked," Basurin told a press briefing on Friday.

The number of shelling incidents employing forbidden weapons increased in the south of the region at the beginning of the week: an 11-year-old girl was injured and two residential buildings were damaged, he said.

In addition, the Ukrainian army has been trying to destabilize the area around the Donetsk water filtering station, Basurin said.

"The Ukrainian command has bluntly violated earlier agreements between the parties and documented guarantees, which forbid the deployment of any armed units and weapons at a range of 1.5 kilometers around the Donetsk water filtering station. Yet we have established that Ukrainian servicemen have built shelters for their troops near the Donetsk water filtering station, which may put the station staff in jeopardy," he said.

The Ukrainian army said for its part on Friday that the Donbas militia had launched 78 attacks on its positions in the past 24 hours.

"Three soldiers of ours suffered injuries," the army operation staff said on Facebook on Friday morning.
