Demolition of Soviet war memorials in Europe is at odds with UN Charter - Lavrov

MOSCOW. Jan 20 (Interfax) - Moscow is profoundly concerned about the demolition and vandalizing of Soviet war memorials in Europe, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"The dirty war on monuments, which leads to the demolition and vandalizing of monuments to Red Army soldiers who sacrificed their lives to liberate and to save Europe from the brown plague, is a source of deep concern," Lavrov said on Friday at the opening ceremony of "The Holocaust: Destruction, Liberation, Salvation" exhibition on Friday.

"Such actions are not just profoundly amoral but also at odds with the UN Charter," the minister said.

Nazism is being rehabilitated and history is being rewritten in many states to selfish ends, Lavrov said.

He also said he was honored to open an exhibition commemorating Holocaust victims.

Moscow is open to cooperation with every Jewish organization, he said.

Before Lavrov gave his speech, he visited the exhibition depicting archive documents and photographs of the Soviet army's liberation of Jewish inmates of WWII prison camps.
