Up to 2,500 militants amassed near Afghan-Tajik border - Tajik Interior Minister

DUSHANBE. Jan 20 (Interfax) - Up to 2,500 terrorist fighters have amassed in Afghan regions bordering Tajikistan, Tajik Interior Minister Ramazan Rahimzoda said.

The Tajik-Afghan border situation is quiet for now, but there is information about accumulating terrorist groups, he told a press conference on Friday.

"We are monitoring the activity of these groups together with the Afghan authorities in order to prevent their crossing into the territory of Tajikistan," the minister said.

As to the total number of militants in Afghanistan, the minister said, "I cannot count every member of an extremist cell but, according to my estimates, from 10,000 to 15,000 militants may be located in Afghanistan."
