MOSCOW. Feb 16 (Interfax) - The ceasefire in Syria will be strictly monitored by the guarantor-countries, the Russian General Staff said.
"Both the [Syrian] government delegation, and the opposition representative expressed their strong intention to observe the cessation of hostilities. For our part, we the guarantor-countries will rigidly monitor how the parties comply with these conditions," deputy head of the Main Operative Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff Stanislav Gadzhimagomedov said by video link from Astana.
Efforts will continue to work out the conflicting parties' ceasefire commitments and to clarify the monitoring procedure in Syria, he said. "An effective monitoring mechanism has thus been created, which encourages the conflicting parties to observe the cessation of hostilities," Gadzhimagomedov said.
