Media report death of Russian military serviceman in Syria

MOSCOW. March 6 (Interfax) - A 24-year-old Russian reconnaissance officer has been killed in Syria, according to a report on the Kommersant newspaper's website on Monday.

"Today Nizhny Novgorod bid farewell to 24-year-old Artyom Gorbunov, a serviceman with the 96th separate intelligence brigade, who was killed during the storming of Palmyra on March 2," the report said.

His widow confirmed reports of the serviceman's death. "He was killed in the line of duty," Sofia Gorbunova told the newspaper.

In all, the Russian Defense Ministry has officially recognized the deaths of 27 Russian military servicemen during the Syria campaign.
