IVANOVO. March 24 (Interfax) - The Moscow District Military Court has convicted a resident of Ivanovo for recruiting his fellow countrymen for participation in the illegal military units of the Islamic State (a terrorist organization banned in Russia) on the territory of Iraq and Syria, the press service for the region's prosecutors said.
The man was found guilty of making public calls for terrorist and extremist activities, and also making preparations for participation in the work of a terrorist organization, and was sentenced to four years in a penal colony.
The court found that the 22-year-old resident of Ivanovo, a radical Islamist, posted a freely accessible text calling for terrorist and extremist activities on his account on a social networking site in January 2016.
The report said that he "called for violent actions against a group of people based on religious affiliation."
"He tried to get three people to participate in the work of ISIL, an international terrorist organization banned in Russia, by persuasion, promises and other means. However, he did not carry out the crime as he was detained," the report said.
The man admitted his guilt back during the investigation into the criminal; case, which was conducted by the investigations department of the Russian Federal Security Service for the Ivanovo region.
The Ivanovo region's prosecutors supported the state prosecutors in the criminal case.
The sentence has not yet taken legal force.
