Abbas hopes to discuss Israeli-Palestinian peace process in Moscow in May

MOSCOW. March 27 (Interfax) - The Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is planning to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and results of the Arab League summit in Amman with Russian leaders during his visit to Moscow on May 11, Palestinian Ambassador to Russia Abdel Hafiz Nofal told Interfax.

"Yes, he will arrive on May 11, this is true. There are three reasons for the visit: first of all, it is necessary to discuss the results of the Arab League summit in Amman, which will be held this month. The summit attendees will be discussing the Palestinian problem, terrorism, Syria, Iraq, Libya, and Yemen. A resolution at the end of the summit will be very important," Nofal said.

"Second. The main issue for the Palestinians is our relations with Israel, where we are heading to. A few months ago Russia proposed organizing a meeting between Abbas and Netanyahu. We agreed. But Israel has been avoiding [a discussion of] peace process issues in every possible way. The new U.S. administration, its Special Representative Jason Greenblatt met with Mahmoud Abbas. We need to discuss many things with the Russian leadership, with President Putin," the ambassador said.

"Third: our bilateral relations. Normally we coordinate with Russia our positions on the situation in Syria, on the situation in the region, in the economy. Next month, on April 4 to 7 Moscow will be hosting a meeting of the intergovernmental commission. We are planning to discuss bilateral relations on various levels," Nofal said.
