Two members of gang which attacked servicemen in Chechnya in 1999 sentenced to long terms in prison

ROSTOV-ON-DON. March 28 (Interfax) - The guilty verdict has been pronounced in Chechnya against two members of an armed gang, who were involved in an assault on servicemen in 1999, the Russian Investigative Committee press service reported on Monday.

"The inquiry and the court have found out that the defendants joined the Nogai Jamaat gang, which among other units under joint command of Shamil Basayev and Khattab, has perpetrated an armed attack on servicemen of the Russian Defense Ministry army unit in the Chervlennaya populated area on October 4, 1999. Fifteen servicemen were killed, another 28 suffered injuries of varying severities in the bandit raid," the statement said.

The defendants have been found guilty of a murder attempt on servicemen. Under the court judgment, one of them was sentenced to 15 years, the second one - 8.5 years in a high-security penal colony.

The investigators are identifying other members of the gang, the press release said.
