Syrian opposition's Cairo group calls on Moscow to increase pressure on al-Assad's regime to participate in Geneva negotiations

Geneva. March 28 (Interfax) - The Syrian opposition's Cairo group has discussed 'four tracks' of the political settlement at the intra-Syrian talks in Geneva during a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov and called on the Russian side to put pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government, Jamal Suleiman, leader of the group, said.

"We have met with Gatilov. Our dialogue was focused on negotiations, in particular, on the balance between 'four tracks.' We expressed to Gatilov our support to de Mistura's ideas and his views regarding 'four tracks,'" he told reporters in Geneva on Tuesday.

"We asked Mr. Gatilov for Russia to put more pressure on the regime so it would participate in the negotiating process more seriously," Suleiman said.

Gatilov informed about the situation "on the ground" in Syria and problems pertaining to the ceasefire, he said.

"From what he told us, we understood that the ceasefire is very important for the Russian side, and it can give a positive impetus to the political settlement," he said.
